EXPLORE & PLAY The City of Montreal


Vermont, Lake Placid, Canada, and other wondrous destinations are only minutes away from Essex. Consider the Inn your hub for an international adventure, a jaunt to the site of the ’80 Olympics or a trek to bustling Burlington.

VERMONT is three miles east of the Inn, across the Lake. The ferry to Charlotte, VT  leaves Essex regularly. Middlebury, Burlington, and Shelburne offer museums, restaurants, and the splendor of the Green Mountain State. Bike to the Maritime Museum at Basin Harbor and Shelburne Vineyard or drive to sundry other destinations.

AUSABLE CHASM: explore up to five miles of scenic walking/hiking trails, float tours via raft, tubing, rappelling, lantern tours, 18-hole disc golf course, mountain bike rentals, and more. Established in 1870, the Chasm is one of the oldest attractions in the U.S.

MONTREAL, the cultural capital of Canada, is less than 90 minutes away, depending on time at the border crossing. In fact, some people commute from Essex to Montreal, known for its European flavor and food, festivals & fun.

LAKE PLACID, home to the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980, is 45 minutes away. Window shop down Main Street and stop for lunch in any one of more than 30 fantastic restaurants. The Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) runs a variety of venues for competitions and recreation year-round, including the Olympic Center, Olympic Jumping Complex, Bobsled Experience, Biking Center, and Whiteface Mountain.

SHELBURNE VINEYARD, seven miles north of the Charlotte ferry dock, produces some of the finest cold hardy wines in the region. Stroll the vineyards, take a picnic, and enjoy wine tastings.
